<itunes:summary>In this lesson you will learn two new sounds, the hard 'G' and 'K'. The 'K' sound is made by both the letter 'K' and the letter 'C'. The letter 'G' makes two different sounds, the hard 'G' and the soft 'G'. The soft 'G' sound is like the 'J' sound. This lesson we will practice the hard 'G' sound.

Some of the words that use these sounds are "gold" and "cold", "gale" and "kale" and "bag" and "back".

<itunes:summary>In the first two "Functional Phrases" lessons you practiced greetings. This lesson you will practice what to say when you leave. There are both polite and casual things to say.

Goodbye.
Goodnight.
Farewell.
Take care.
See you tomorrow.
See you later.
See ya!

"Farewell" is very final sounding, when maybe you won't meet again. "See ya!" is very casual and friendly.

<itunes:summary>In this "Functional Phrases" lesson, you will practice how to respond to the greetings in lesson 1. For example, in lesson 1 you learned "How are you?" There are many different ways to reply:

I'm fine, thank you.
Fine, thanks. And you?
I'm doing fine. How about you?
I'm O.K.
I'm alright.
I'm doing O.K.
Eh, not bad.

The first one is the most polite. You can mix the "thank you", "thanks", "And you?" and "How about you?" with different replies, like "Eh, not bad. How about you?"

"I'm doing fine" can be changed to "I'm doing alright" too.

<itunes:summary>In this lesson you will learn two new sounds, 'L' and 'R'. These two sounds are very difficult for some people to hear and say. This is especially true for speakers of languages like Japanese and Chinese. It is very important for you to be good at these two sounds. Very many English words are the same except for 'L' and 'R'. For example "light" and "right" or "lice" and "rice". It can be embarassing to say "I eat lice" when you want to say "I eat rice". If you have problems with 'L' and 'R', please practice with this lesson several times.

<itunes:summary>"Functional Phrases" is a new UGoEigo ESL podcast. Each lesson will teach you to pronounce a few useful phrases in English. Like in the "English Sounds" lessons, watch my mouth and say the words with me. These lessons will be shorter and hopefully more frequent...

This lesson is about greetings. The phrases used are:

"Good morning." - Good morning.
"Good afternoon." - Good afternoon.
"Good evening." - Good evening.
"Hello, how are you?" - Hello, how are you?
"Hi, how are you doing?" - Hi, how are you doing?
"Hi there! How's it going?" - Hi there! How's it going? (casual)
"Hey! What's up?" - Hey! What's up? (casual)

The last two are casual greetings. Use them with good friends. If you need translation help, use the "Choose your language" flags at the top of this page.

<itunes:summary>(Sorry this lesson is late. It was a little harder to make. It is also a little longer.)

This lesson we will practice all the sounds you have learned so far. To speak well, you must be able to speak quickly and smoothly. So we will practice "tongue-twisters". Don't worry if they're hard. They are hard for native speakers too. Just say them as fast as you can.

<itunes:summary>The second lesson introduces the sounds of two more letters in English: F and V. In it we practice similar words like "fan" and "van", "safe" and "save" as well as "leaf" and "leave". Both sounds start by touching your upper teeth to your lower lip. But what you do next is different for each letter. Watch the video for details.

<itunes:summary>In this first lesson, I will teach you how to say the sounds for the letters 'B' and 'P'. These are sometimes a little hard for some people. Many of my students have trouble with words like "bear" and "pear" and think they sound the same. If you have the same problem, this lesson should help.
