Welcome to the seventh UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.

In this podcast we will study two English sounds.

Listen to me say each word and watch my mouth.

Then say the word along with me.

Move your mouth the same way as mine.

This lesson we will compare the ‘H’ and ‘Y’ sounds.

You learned how to say the ‘H’ sound in lesson 5.

Watch and say it with me…

Today’s new sound is ‘Y’.

Watch and say it with me…

What is the same? What is different?

Your mouth’s shape is the same for ‘H’ and ‘Y’.

Where you put your tongue is different, though.

To make the ‘H’ sound, keep your tongue down.

To make the ‘Y’ sound, raise your tongue.

See the difference?

Lower your tongue for ‘H’, raise your tongue for ‘Y’.

Both use your voice.
